How to Remove Registry Entries

The Windows registry is vital database used to store system settings including hardware, software, and user settings. Programs use the registry to store their settings. Normally, the registry should not be modified manually. However, if your computer is infected with malicious software such as spyware and you want to do a manual removal, then modifying the Windows registry is required. The malicious software may add registry entries or keys that can force your web browser to change its homepage and start/load other malicious software when Windows restarts. To remove malicious registry setting do the following:

1.) Start Windows Registry Editor
Click on the Windows Start button click on the Run icon. In the prompt type in regedit as shown here:

Windows Registry Regedit

Ciick OK and the Windows Registry Editor will appear as shown here:

Windows Registry Editor

The Windows Registry Editor consists of two panes as shown in the above screenshot. The left pane is used to navigate to a certain registry key. The right pane displays the value assigned to the registry key.

2.) Backup Registry
Before attempting to make any changes in the registry, make a complete backup so that if anything goes wrong the original registry can be restored. To make a backup using the Windows Registry Editor, go to File>Export and make sure to check the “All” option for the export range as shown here:

3.) Find and Delete Registry Entry
Once you have a backup of your registry, you can then proceed to find the malicious registry key (entry) and then delete it. As an example, let say we wanted to delete the following:

HKEY_CURRENT_CONFIG\Software\Fonts\LogPixels

To do this expand HKEY_CURRENT_CONFIG in the left pane of the Windows Registry Editor, then expand Software, and then expand Fonts. In the right pane you will see the LogPixels registry key. To delete it, simply select LogPixels and right click and select delete. This is only an example, do not delete LogPixels. The following screenshot illustrates this process:
